If a wheel is bent, cracked, severely corroded, or otherwise damaged, replace it promptly. Continuing to drive with a compromised wheel may allow the tire to separate from the rim, cause air pressure loss, or reduce steering and handling control.

Wheel selection

When replacing a wheel on the Toyota RAV4, make sure the new wheel matches the original in load capacity, diameter, rim width, and inset*. Correct wheel specifications are essential for proper tire fitment, predictable handling, and safe operation.

Suitable replacement wheels are available through a Toyota dealer, where compatibility with the vehicle can be confirmed before installation.

*: Commonly referred to as offset.

Toyota does not recommend using any of the following:

  • Wheels that differ from the specified size, construction, or type
  • Used wheels with an unknown service history or hidden damage
  • Bent wheels that have been repaired or straightened

■ When replacing wheels (vehicles with tire pressure warning system)

The wheels installed on the Toyota RAV4 are equipped with tire pressure warning valves and transmitters. These components allow the tire pressure warning system to monitor inflation pressure and notify the driver when a significant pressure loss is detected.

Whenever a wheel is replaced, the appropriate tire pressure warning valve and transmitter must also be installed and handled correctly. The system may require registration and initialization after the replacement work is completed.

WARNING

■ When replacing wheels

  • Do not install wheels of a size or specification different from those recommended in the Owner’s Manual. Incorrect wheels can affect tire fitment, suspension operation, steering response, and vehicle stability, increasing the risk of losing control.
  • Never install an inner tube in a leaking wheel designed for a tubeless tire. The tube may not seat or operate correctly inside the tire and could fail unexpectedly, resulting in an accident that may cause death or serious injury.

■ When installing the wheel nuts

  • Install every wheel nut with its tapered end facing inward toward the wheel. If a nut is installed in the opposite direction, it may not seat correctly against the wheel. This can damage the wheel, allow the nuts to loosen, and eventually cause the wheel to detach while the Toyota RAV4 is moving.
  • Never apply oil, grease, or another lubricant to the wheel bolts or wheel nuts. Lubrication changes the tightening force and may cause the nuts to be overtightened, damaging the bolts or wheel. It may also allow the nuts to loosen during driving, which could cause the wheel to come off and lead to a serious accident. Remove all traces of oil or grease before installation.

■ Use of defective wheels prohibited

Never install or continue using a wheel that is cracked, bent, deformed, or otherwise structurally damaged.

A defective wheel may fail to seal correctly against the tire, allowing air pressure to escape while the Toyota RAV4 is being driven. Sudden pressure loss can affect stability and steering control and may lead to an accident resulting in death or serious injury.

NOTICE

■ Replacing tire pressure warning valves and transmitters (vehicles with tire pressure warning system)

  • Tire removal, repair, and replacement can damage the tire pressure warning valves and transmitters if the components are handled incorrectly. Have this work performed by a Toyota dealer or another qualified service facility familiar with tire pressure monitoring equipment. Replacement valves and transmitters should be obtained through a Toyota dealer to help ensure correct compatibility with the Toyota RAV4 system.
  • Use genuine Toyota wheels specified for your vehicle whenever replacement is necessary.

    Non-genuine wheels may differ in shape, material, valve mounting design, or internal clearance. These differences can prevent the tire pressure warning valves and transmitters from fitting securely or communicating reliably with the monitoring system.

Aluminum wheel precautions

  • Use only Toyota wheel nuts and wheel wrenches designed for the aluminum wheels installed on the Toyota RAV4. Incorrect hardware may not seat properly and can damage the wheel mounting surfaces.
  • After rotating, repairing, or replacing the tires, check that the wheel nuts remain securely tightened after driving 1000 miles (1600 km). This follow-up inspection helps confirm that each wheel remains seated correctly.
  • Exercise care when fitting or removing tire chains so that the chains, fasteners, or installation tools do not scratch, chip, or deform the aluminum wheels.
  • When balancing the wheels, use genuine Toyota balance weights or equivalent components suitable for aluminum wheels. A plastic or rubber hammer should be used during installation to avoid marking or damaging the wheel finish.
