Toyota RAV4: Maintenance and care - Air conditioning filter

The air conditioning filter should be inspected and replaced regularly to preserve efficient climate-control performance and maintain consistent airflow through the Toyota RAV4 ventilation system.

Removal method

1. Turn the engine switch to OFF before beginning the replacement procedure.

2. Open the glove box, then carefully slide the damper off its mounting point.

3. Press both sides of the glove box inward to release the retaining claws. While supporting the glove box with your hands, lower it slowly until it is fully open.

4. With the glove box fully lowered, lift it slightly and pull it toward the seat to detach its lower mounting points.

If the glove box does not release with gentle pulling, do not apply excessive force. Adjust its height slightly while continuing to pull it toward the seat until the lower section separates from its mounting points.

5. Release the filter cover lock (A), disengage the filter cover from the retaining claws (B), and carefully remove the cover.

6. Pull the filter case straight out of the air-conditioning unit without tilting it unnecessarily.

7. Remove the used air conditioning filter from the filter case and install a new filter in the same position.

The “ UP” marks printed on the filter must face upward when the filter is installed.

8. Reinstall the filter case, cover, glove box, and damper by completing the removal steps in reverse order. Check that every claw and mounting point is engaged securely before closing the glove box.

■ Checking interval

Inspect and replace the air conditioning filter at the intervals specified in the maintenance schedule. The filter may require earlier replacement when the Toyota RAV4 is frequently driven in dusty locations, heavy traffic, or other conditions where airborne contaminants accumulate more quickly. For the applicable service interval, refer to the “Owner’s Manual Supplement” or “Scheduled Maintenance”.

■ If air flow from the vents decreases dramatically

A noticeable reduction in airflow may indicate that the filter is heavily contaminated or clogged. Inspect the filter and replace it when necessary to restore normal ventilation performance.

■ When using the air conditioning system

Always operate the Toyota RAV4 air conditioning system with the correct filter installed.

Running the system without a filter allows dust and debris to enter the ventilation unit, which can contaminate internal components and lead to reduced performance or system damage.

■ When removing the glove box

Follow the specified removal procedure and support the glove box throughout the process. Pulling or twisting it incorrectly may damage the hinge, retaining claws, or mounting points.

■ To prevent damage to the filter cover

When moving the filter cover in the direction of the arrow to release the fitting, apply only the force required to disengage the claws. Excessive pressure can bend or break the retaining sections and prevent the cover from being secured correctly during installation.
