This section explains how to open, close, lock, and unlock the doors of the Toyota RAV4 using the available key, remote control, and door-mounted functions. Proper operation helps maintain convenient access while ensuring that the Toyota RAV4 is secured before driving or leaving the vehicle unattended.

Side doors Toyota RAV4 2026

The Toyota RAV4 can be locked and unlocked using the entry function, wireless remote control, door lock switches, key, or inside lock buttons. The available method depends on whether the vehicle is equipped with the smart key system.

Unlocking and locking the doors from the outside

■ Using the entry function (vehicles with smart key system)

Carry the electronic key with you to enable the entry function. When the key is within the effective operating range, the doors can be controlled through the sensors built into the exterior door handles.

1. Grip the driver's door handle to unlock the driver's door. Holding the driver's door handle for approximately 2 seconds unlocks all the doors.

   Grip the front passenger's door handle or a rear door handle on some models to unlock all the doors*.

Make sure your hand touches the unlock sensor located on the back of the handle. Simply touching the front surface of the handle may not activate the entry function.

The doors cannot be unlocked for approximately 3 seconds after they have been locked.

*: The door unlock settings can be changed to suit the preferred unlocking operation.

2. Touch the lock sensor, identified by the indentation on the upper part of the door handle, to lock all the doors.

After using the lock sensor, check that every door is securely locked before leaving the Toyota RAV4 unattended.

■ Using the wireless remote control

Vehicles without smart key system

1. Locks all the doors

Check that all doors are securely locked after pressing the lock button.

2. Unlocks all the doors

Pressing the unlock button once unlocks the driver's door. Pressing the button again within 5 seconds unlocks the remaining doors.

Press and hold the button to open the side windows.* Release the button when the windows reach the desired position.

Vehicles with smart key system

1. Locks all the doors

Check that every door is securely locked after operating the wireless remote control.

2. Unlocks all the doors

Pressing the unlock button once unlocks the driver's door. Pressing the button again within 5 seconds unlocks the other doors.

Press and hold the button to open the side windows and the moon roof, if equipped, or the panoramic moon roof, if equipped. Release the button when the windows and roof have opened to the desired position.*

■ Using the key

Vehicles without smart key system

1. Locks all the doors

Turn and hold the key in the locking direction to close the side windows.* Release the key when the windows reach the required position.

2. Unlocks all the doors

Turning the key once unlocks the driver's door. Turning the key again within 5 seconds unlocks the remaining doors.

Turn and hold the key in the unlocking direction to open the side windows.*

Vehicles with smart key system

The doors can also be locked and unlocked with the mechanical key if the electronic entry function cannot be used. This provides an alternative way to access or secure the Toyota RAV4 when necessary.

■ Switching the door unlock function (vehicles with smart key system)

It is possible to select which doors are unlocked by the entry function using the wireless remote control. Perform the switching operation while inside the vehicle or while standing within approximately 3.2 ft. (1 m) of the vehicle so the electronic key can communicate reliably with the system.

1. Turn the engine switch to OFF before beginning the door unlock setting procedure.

2. Confirm that the indicator light on the key surface is not illuminated. Then, while pressing and holding , press and hold , or for approximately 5 seconds.

The setting changes each time this operation is performed, as shown below. When changing the setting repeatedly, release all buttons, wait for at least 5 seconds, and then repeat step 2. This allows the desired Toyota RAV4 door unlock configuration to be selected correctly.

Vehicles with an alarm: To prevent the alarm from being triggered unintentionally, unlock the doors using the wireless remote control and then open and close one of the doors after the settings have been changed. If a door is not opened within 60 seconds after is pressed, the doors will lock again and the alarm will be set automatically. If the alarm is triggered, stop it immediately using the appropriate alarm cancellation procedure.

■ Operation signals

Doors: A buzzer sounds and the emergency flashers operate to confirm that the doors have been locked or unlocked using the entry function or wireless remote control.

The emergency flashers operate once when the doors are locked and twice when the doors are unlocked.

Side windows and moon roof, if equipped, or panoramic moon roof, if equipped: A buzzer sounds while the side windows and moon roof or panoramic moon roof are being operated using the wireless remote control. Pay attention to the confirmation sound while carrying out the operation.

■ Security feature

Vehicles without smart key system

If a door is not opened within approximately 60 seconds after the Toyota RAV4 is unlocked using the wireless remote control, the security feature automatically locks the vehicle again.

Vehicles with smart key system

If a door is not opened within approximately 60 seconds after the vehicle is unlocked using the entry function or wireless remote control, the security feature automatically locks the vehicle again. However, depending on the location of the electronic key, it may be detected as being inside the vehicle. In this situation, the vehicle may remain unlocked.

■ When the door cannot be locked by the lock sensor on the upper part of the door handle (vehicles with smart key system)

If the door does not lock when the upper sensor area is touched, touch the upper and lower sensor areas at the same time. Make sure that your fingers make direct contact with both sensor areas.

If you are wearing gloves, remove them and touch the sensors again, as the material may prevent the lock sensor from detecting your hand correctly.

■ Door lock buzzer (vehicles with smart key system)

If an attempt is made to lock the doors using the smart key system while a door other than the door being locked is open, a buzzer sounds continuously for 5 seconds. Fully close every door, confirm that none of the doors are partially open, and then lock the Toyota RAV4 again.

■ Setting the alarm (if equipped)

Locking the doors sets the alarm system. Make sure the doors are securely locked when leaving the Toyota RAV4.

■ If the smart key system (if equipped) or the wireless remote control does not operate properly

• Vehicles with smart key system: Use the mechanical key to lock or unlock the doors when the smart key system cannot be operated.
• If the key battery is depleted, replace it with a new battery before attempting to use the wireless functions again.

■ If the battery is discharged

If the vehicle battery is discharged, the doors cannot be locked or unlocked using the smart key system, if equipped, or the wireless remote control. Lock or unlock the doors using the key on vehicles without the smart key system, or use the mechanical key on vehicles equipped with the smart key system.

■ Rear seat reminder function

• To help remind you not to leave luggage or other items in the rear seat, a buzzer sounds and a message appears on the multi-information display for approximately 6 seconds when the engine switch is turned to OFF after either of the following conditions has been met:
  • The engine is started within 10 minutes after a rear door has been opened and closed.
  • A rear door is opened and closed after the engine has been started.

However, if a rear door is opened and then closed within approximately 2 seconds, the rear seat reminder function may not operate.

• The rear seat reminder function determines whether luggage or another item may have been placed in a rear seat based on the opening and closing of a rear door. Depending on the circumstances, the function may not operate even when an item remains in the rear seat, or it may activate when no reminder is necessary. Always check the rear seating area before leaving the Toyota RAV4.
• The rear seat reminder function can be enabled or disabled through the applicable vehicle settings.

■ Customization

Certain settings, including the door unlocking function operated with the key, can be changed to suit the preferred use of the Toyota RAV4.

WARNING

■ To prevent an accident

Observe the following precautions while driving the vehicle.

Failure to follow these precautions may cause a door to open while the vehicle is moving. An occupant could be thrown from the vehicle, resulting in death or serious injury.

• Make sure that all doors are properly closed and securely locked before driving.
• Do not pull an inside door handle while the vehicle is moving.

  Be especially careful with the front doors, as they may be opened using the inside handles even when the inside lock buttons are in the locked position.

• Set the rear door child-protector locks whenever children are seated in the rear seats.

■ When opening or closing a door

Check the area around the vehicle before opening or closing a door. Confirm whether the Toyota RAV4 is parked on an incline, whether there is sufficient clearance for the door to open safely, and whether strong wind could cause the door to move suddenly. Hold the door handle firmly throughout the operation so that you are prepared for any unexpected movement.

■ When using the wireless remote control, key or mechanical key and operating the power windows, moon roof (if equipped) or panoramic moon roof (if equipped)

Operate the power windows, moon roof, or panoramic moon roof only after confirming that no passenger has a hand, arm, head, or any other part of their body in a position where it could become caught by the closing side window, moon roof, or panoramic moon roof.

Do not allow children to operate the wireless remote control, key, or mechanical key. Children or other passengers could become caught in a side window, moon roof, or panoramic moon roof if these controls are operated unexpectedly. Before closing any of these openings on the Toyota RAV4, carefully check the position of every occupant.

Unlocking and locking the doors from the inside

■ Using the door lock switch

The door lock switch allows all side doors of the Toyota RAV4 to be locked or unlocked at the same time from inside the vehicle.

■ Using the inside lock buttons

1. Locks the door
2. Unlocks the door

Each inside lock button controls the corresponding door. The front doors can still be opened by pulling the inside door handle even when the lock buttons are in the locked position.

■ Locking the front doors from the outside without a key

1. Move the inside lock button to the locked position.
2. Close the door while confirming that the key is not left in a location that could prevent access to the vehicle.

Vehicles without smart key system

The door cannot be locked using this procedure if the key remains in the engine switch.

Vehicles with smart key system

The door cannot be locked using this procedure if the engine switch is in ACC or ON, or if the electronic key is detected inside the vehicle.

Depending on the location and position of the electronic key, it may not be detected correctly and the door may still lock. Confirm that you have the electronic key with you before closing the door.

■ Open door warning buzzer

If the vehicle speed reaches 3 mph (5 km/h) while one or more doors or the hood are not fully closed, a buzzer sounds to alert the driver.

The open door or hood is also identified on the multi-information display. Stop the Toyota RAV4 in a safe location and securely close the indicated door or hood before continuing to drive.

■ When all the doors are locked with the entry function (vehicles with smart key system), wireless remote control or key

• The doors cannot be unlocked using the interior door lock switch while they remain locked by one of these outside locking methods.
• The door lock switch can be reset by unlocking all the doors with the entry function on vehicles with a smart key system, the wireless remote control, or the key.

Rear door child-protector lock

When the child-protector lock is set, the corresponding rear door cannot be opened from inside the vehicle, even if the inside door handle is pulled.

These locks can be used to help prevent children from opening the rear doors from inside the vehicle. Push down the child-protector switch on each rear door to place both rear doors in the locked position.

Automatic door locking and unlocking systems

The following automatic door locking and unlocking functions can be enabled or canceled according to the available Toyota RAV4 settings:

Back door Toyota RAV4

The Toyota RAV4 back door can be locked, unlocked, opened, and closed using the procedures described in this section.

WARNING
Observe the following precautions.

Failure to follow these precautions may result in death or serious injury.

■ Before driving

• Make sure that the back door is fully closed.

  If the back door is not completely closed, it may open unexpectedly while the vehicle is moving and strike nearby objects. Luggage stored in the luggage compartment may also be thrown out, potentially causing an accident.

• Do not allow children to play inside the luggage compartment.

  A child who is accidentally locked in the luggage compartment could suffer heat exhaustion or other serious injuries.

• Do not allow a child to open or close the back door.

  The back door may move unexpectedly, or the child's hands, head, neck, or other body parts could become caught while the back door is closing.

■ Important points while driving

• Keep the back door fully closed while driving.

  If the back door is left open, it may strike nearby objects, or luggage may fall or be thrown from the luggage compartment and cause an accident.

• Never allow anyone to sit in the luggage compartment.

  An occupant riding in this area is highly susceptible to death or serious injury in the event of sudden braking, abrupt steering, or a collision.

■ Back door handles

Do not hang any object from the back door handles.

The additional weight may cause the back door to close suddenly, trapping part of a person's body and resulting in death or serious injury.

■ Operating the back door

Observe the following precautions whenever opening or closing the Toyota RAV4 back door.

Failure to do so may cause hands, fingers, or other body parts to become caught, resulting in death or serious injury.

• Before opening the back door, remove heavy accumulations such as snow or ice. Otherwise, the additional weight may cause the back door to close suddenly after it has been opened.
• Before opening or closing the back door, carefully check the surrounding area and make sure the operation can be completed safely.
• If anyone is standing nearby, confirm that they are in a safe position and inform them that the back door is about to open or close.
• Use particular caution when opening or closing the back door in windy conditions, as a strong gust may cause it to move abruptly.
• Vehicles without power back door: The back door may suddenly close if it has not been opened completely. Opening or closing the back door on an incline is more difficult than on a level surface, and the door may move unexpectedly under its own weight. Before accessing the luggage compartment, make sure the back door is fully open and remains securely in position.

• Vehicles with power back door: When the vehicle is parked on a steep incline, the back door may suddenly close if it is not opened fully. Make sure the back door is securely positioned before using the luggage compartment.
• When closing the back door, take extra care to prevent fingers, hands, or other body parts from becoming caught between the door and the vehicle body.

• Vehicles without power back door: To close the back door completely, press lightly against its outer surface. Do not use the back door handle to push the door fully closed, as this could cause a hand or arm to become caught.
• Do not pull the back door damper stay on vehicles without a power back door or the back door spindle on vehicles with a power back door in order to close the door. Do not hang from or place body weight on the damper stay or spindle.

  Doing so may cause a hand to become caught or may damage the back door damper stay or spindle, potentially resulting in an accident.

• Vehicles without power back door: If a bicycle carrier or another heavy accessory is attached to the back door, the door may suddenly close after being opened, trapping and injuring a person's hands, head, or neck. When fitting an accessory to the back door, the use of a genuine Toyota part is recommended.

Unlocking and locking the back door from the outside Toyota RAV4 compact crossover

■ Using the entry function (vehicles with smart key system)

Carry the electronic key with you to enable the entry function. When the key is within the effective operating range, the back door controls can be used to lock or unlock the Toyota RAV4.

1. Unlocks all the doors
   The doors cannot be unlocked for approximately 3 seconds immediately after they have been locked.
2. Locks all the doors
   After operating the lock switch, check that the back door and all other doors are securely locked.

■ Operation signals

A buzzer sounds and the emergency flashers operate to indicate that the doors have been locked or unlocked using the entry function, if equipped, or the wireless remote control. The emergency flashers operate once when the doors are locked and twice when they are unlocked.

■ Security feature

Vehicles without smart key system

If none of the doors are opened within approximately 60 seconds after the vehicle is unlocked using the wireless remote control, the security feature automatically locks the Toyota RAV4 again.

Vehicles with smart key system

If none of the doors are opened within approximately 60 seconds after the vehicle is unlocked using the entry function or wireless remote control, the security feature automatically locks the vehicle again. However, depending on the location of the electronic key, it may be detected as being inside the vehicle. In this situation, the vehicle may remain unlocked.

Opening/closing the back door (vehicles without power back door)

■ Open

Press the back door opener switch upward, and raise the back door while continuing to support its movement.

■ Close

Lower the back door using back door handle A. When the door is near the closed position, press down on its outer surface from outside the vehicle until it closes completely.

Do not pull the back door sideways while closing it with the handle, as the handle should be used only to guide the door downward.

■ Luggage compartment light

• The luggage compartment light turns on automatically when the back door is opened.
• When the engine switch is turned to OFF, the light turns off automatically after approximately 20 minutes.

■ If the back door opener is inoperative

If the exterior back door opener cannot be operated, the back door can be unlocked manually from inside the luggage compartment by following the procedure below.

1. Remove the cover.

To help prevent scratches or other damage, wrap the tip of the screwdriver with a rag before using it.

2. Loosen the screw securing the internal access component.

3. Turn the cover as shown to access the internal release mechanism.

4. Move the lever to unlock the back door manually.

5. When reinstalling the removed components, perform the preceding steps in reverse order and make sure each part is securely returned to its original position.

NOTICE

■ Back door damper stays

The back door is equipped with damper stays that support it and hold it in the open position.

Observe the following precautions when handling or working near the damper stays.

Failure to follow these precautions may damage a back door damper stay and cause it to malfunction.

• Do not attach foreign objects, including stickers, plastic sheets, tape, or adhesive materials, to the damper stay rod.
• Do not touch the damper stay rod with gloves, cloth, or other fabric items.
• Do not install accessories on the back door other than genuine Toyota parts.
• Do not place your hand on the damper stay or apply sideways force to the rod or its mounting points.

Opening/closing the back door (vehicles with power back door) Toyota RAV4 hybrid

■ Using the wireless remote control

Press and hold the switch to operate the power back door.

The Toyota RAV4 power back door opens or closes automatically, depending on its current position.

Pressing the switch while the power back door is opening or closing stops the operation. To reverse the direction after the door has stopped, press and hold the switch again.

■ Using the power back door switch on the instrument panel

Press and hold the instrument panel switch to operate the power back door.

The power back door opens or closes automatically.

Make sure the back door is unlocked before attempting to operate it with this switch.

Pressing the switch while the power back door is opening or closing stops its movement. When the switch is pressed and held again after the operation has stopped, the back door moves in the opposite direction.

■ Using the back door opener switch

When the back door is unlocked, press the back door opener switch.

When the back door is locked, carry the electronic key with you and press and hold the back door opener switch.

The Toyota RAV4 power back door opens automatically when the required operating conditions are met.

Pressing the switch while the power back door is opening or closing stops the operation.

■ Using the power back door switch on the back door

Press the switch located on the back door.

The power back door closes automatically.

Pressing the switch while the power back door is moving stops the operation.

If the switch is pressed again while the operation is stopped, the back door reverses direction and begins moving the opposite way.

■ Using the back door handles

Use back door handle A to lower the back door toward the closed position.

The back door closing assist then activates, allowing the power back door to complete the closing operation automatically. Keep hands and other body parts away from the closing area while the Toyota RAV4 back door is moving.

■ Using the kick sensor (vehicles with Hands Free Power Back Door)

The Hands Free Power Back Door allows the power back door to open or close automatically when you move your foot near the lower center area of the rear bumper and then pull it away. Before operating this function, confirm that the engine switch is in OFF, the Hands Free Power Back Door operation is enabled, and you are carrying an electronic key.

1. While carrying the electronic key, stand within the smart key system operating range, approximately 11.8 to 19.7 in. (30 to 50 cm) from the rear bumper.

2. Perform a kick motion by moving your foot to within approximately 3.9 in. (10 cm) of the rear bumper. Pull your foot back after the buzzer sounds.

• Complete the entire kick motion within 1 second.
• The back door will not begin operating while your foot remains detected beneath the rear bumper.
• Operate the Hands Free Power Back Door without allowing your foot to touch the rear bumper.
• If another electronic key is located inside the cabin or luggage compartment, the system may take slightly longer than usual to respond.
• If the buzzer sounds twice, move away from the detection area and perform the kick operation again.

3. When the kick sensor detects that your foot has been pulled back from beneath the rear bumper, a buzzer sounds and the Toyota RAV4 power back door automatically opens or closes completely.

If a foot is moved beneath the rear bumper while the power back door is opening or closing, the back door stops moving.

If a foot is moved beneath the rear bumper again while the operation is stopped, the power back door reverses direction and begins moving the opposite way.

■ Luggage compartment light

• The luggage compartment light turns on automatically when the back door is opened.
• When the engine switch is turned to OFF, the luggage compartment light turns off automatically after approximately 20 minutes.

■ Back door closer

If the back door is left slightly open, the back door closer automatically pulls it into the fully closed position.

The back door closer operates regardless of the current position or state of the engine switch.

■ Power back door operating conditions

The Toyota RAV4 power back door can open and close automatically when the following operating conditions are satisfied:

• The power back door system is enabled.
• When the engine switch is in ON, in addition to the condition above, the power back door can perform an opening operation when any of the following conditions is met:
  • The parking brake is engaged.
  • The brake pedal is depressed.
  • The shift lever is in P.

■ Operation of the power back door

• A buzzer sounds and the emergency flashers flash twice to indicate that the power back door is beginning an opening or closing operation.
• When the power back door system is disabled, automatic operation is unavailable. However, the back door can still be opened and closed manually.
• If an abnormal condition involving a person or object is detected while the power back door is opening automatically, the operation stops.

■ Jam protection function

Sensors are installed along both sides of the power back door. If an object obstructs the back door while it is closing, the door automatically moves in the opposite direction or stops its movement.

■ Fall-down protection function

If excessive force is applied to the power back door while it is opening automatically, the opening operation stops to help prevent the back door from suddenly closing.

■ Back door closing assist

If the back door is lowered manually while it is stopped in an open position, the closing assist activates and automatically closes the back door completely.

■ Back door reserve lock function

This function allows the locking of all doors to be reserved in advance while the power back door remains open.

When the following procedure is performed, all doors except the power back door are locked first. The power back door is then locked automatically when it reaches the fully closed position.

1. Close all doors except the back door.

2. While the power back door is closing, lock the doors using the smart key system from one of the side doors or by operating the wireless remote control.

A buzzer sounds and the emergency flashers operate to confirm that all doors have been fully closed and locked.

• If the electronic key is placed inside the Toyota RAV4 after a closing operation has been started using the back door reserve lock function, the electronic key may become locked inside the vehicle.
• If the power back door does not close completely because the jam protection function operates or for another reason during automatic closing after a reserve lock operation, the back door reserve lock function is canceled and all doors are unlocked.
• Before leaving the vehicle unattended, confirm that the power back door and all side doors are completely closed and securely locked.

■ Hands Free Power Back Door operating conditions (vehicles with Hands Free Power Back Door)

The Hands Free Power Back Door opens or closes automatically when all of the following operating conditions are met:

• The Hands Free Power Back Door function is enabled.
• The engine switch is in OFF.
• The electronic key is within the applicable operating range.
• A foot is moved close to the lower center area of the rear bumper and then promptly moved away from the bumper.

  The Toyota RAV4 power back door may also respond when a hand, elbow, knee, or another part of the body is moved near and then away from the lower center portion of the rear bumper. Bring it sufficiently close to the center of the detection area without maintaining contact with the bumper.

■ Situations in which the Hands Free Power Back Door may not operate properly (vehicles with Hands Free Power Back Door)

The Hands Free Power Back Door may respond slowly, operate inconsistently, or fail to activate in any of the following situations:

• When a foot remains beneath the rear bumper instead of being moved away promptly.
• When the rear bumper is struck forcefully with a foot or remains in contact with a foot or another object for an extended period.

If the rear bumper has been touched continuously, wait briefly before attempting to operate the Hands Free Power Back Door again.

• When the function is operated while a person is standing too close to the rear bumper.
• When external radio waves interfere with communication between the electronic key and the Toyota RAV4.
• When the vehicle is parked near a source of electrical noise that may affect the sensitivity of the Hands Free Power Back Door, such as a pay parking area, gas station, electrically heated roadway, or fluorescent light.
• When the vehicle is near a television tower, electric power plant, radio station, large electronic display, airport, or another facility that produces strong radio waves or electrical interference.
• When a large amount of water reaches the rear bumper, such as during vehicle washing or heavy rain.
• When mud, snow, ice, or similar material is attached to the rear bumper.
• When the vehicle has been parked for an extended period near plants or other objects that may move and come into contact with the rear bumper.
• When an accessory has been installed on or near the rear bumper.

If an accessory is installed on the rear bumper, disable the Hands Free Power Back Door operation setting.

■ Preventing unintentional operation of the Hands Free Power Back Door (vehicles with Hands Free Power Back Door)

When an electronic key is within the operating range, movement or contact near the rear bumper may cause the Hands Free Power Back Door to operate unintentionally. Exercise particular caution in the following situations:

• When a large amount of water is applied to the rear bumper, including during vehicle washing or heavy rain.
• When dirt, water, or other material is being wiped from the rear bumper.
• When a small animal or an object such as a ball moves beneath the rear bumper.
• When an object is placed beneath the rear bumper or removed from that area.
• When someone sitting on the rear bumper swings their legs beneath it.
• When a person's legs or another part of their body contacts or passes close to the rear bumper while walking around the Toyota RAV4.
• When the vehicle is parked near an electrical noise source that may influence Hands Free Power Back Door sensitivity, such as a pay parking area, gas station, electrically heated roadway, or fluorescent light.
• When the vehicle is near a television tower, electric power plant, radio station, large electronic display, airport, or another location that generates strong radio waves or electrical noise.
• When plants or other movable objects are positioned close to the rear bumper.
• When luggage or other items are placed near the rear bumper.
• When accessories or a vehicle cover are being installed or removed near the rear bumper.
• When the vehicle is being towed.

To prevent the Hands Free Power Back Door from operating unintentionally, disable the Hands Free Power Back Door operation setting.

■ When reconnecting the battery

After reconnecting the battery, close the back door manually to restore proper operation of the Toyota RAV4 power back door.

■ If the back door opener is inoperative

If the exterior back door opener does not operate, the back door can be unlocked manually from inside the vehicle by following the procedure below.

1. Remove the cover.

To help prevent scratches or other damage, wrap the tip of the screwdriver with a rag before removing the cover.

2. Loosen the screw securing the internal cover.

3. Turn the cover as shown to access the release mechanism.

4. Move the lever to unlock the back door manually.

5. When reinstalling the removed components, perform the preceding steps in reverse order and make sure each part is securely returned to its original position.

■ Customization

Certain settings, including the power back door opening angle, can be changed to suit the preferred operation of the Toyota RAV4.

WARNING

■ Back door closer

• If the back door is left slightly open, the back door closer automatically pulls it into the fully closed position.

  The back door closer may take several seconds to begin operating. Keep fingers, hands, clothing, and other objects away from the closing area, as they could become caught and cause bone fractures or other serious injuries.

• Use caution around the back door closer because it remains operational even when the power back door system has been disabled.

■ Power back door

Observe the following precautions whenever operating the power back door.

Failure to follow these precautions may result in death or serious injury.

• Carefully check the surrounding area before operating the power back door. Make sure there are no obstacles, people, or personal belongings that could interfere with the door or become caught during its movement.
• If anyone is standing nearby, confirm that they are in a safe position and inform them that the back door is about to open or close.
• If the power back door system is switched off while the back door is operating automatically, automatic movement stops.

  The back door must then be opened or closed manually. Exercise additional caution when the Toyota RAV4 is parked on an incline, as the back door may move unexpectedly.

• If the required power back door operating conditions are no longer met, a buzzer may sound and the back door may stop while opening or closing. The back door must then be operated manually.

  Take particular care on an incline, where the back door may open or close abruptly under its own weight.

• When the vehicle is parked on an incline, the back door may suddenly close after it has been opened. Confirm that it is fully open and securely supported before accessing the luggage compartment.
• In the following situations, the power back door may detect an abnormal condition and stop automatic operation. If this occurs, operate the back door manually. Use extra caution on an incline because the back door may move abruptly.
  • When the back door comes into contact with an obstacle.
  • When the battery voltage drops suddenly, such as when the engine switch is turned to ON or the engine is started during automatic back door operation.
• If a bicycle carrier or another heavy object is attached to the back door, the additional weight may cause the door to close suddenly after it has been opened, potentially trapping and injuring a person's hands, head, or neck.

When installing an accessory on the back door, the use of a genuine Toyota part is recommended to ensure proper compatibility.

■ Jam protection function

Observe the following precautions when using the jam protection function.

Failure to follow these precautions may result in death or serious injury.

• Never use your hand, arm, leg, or any other part of your body to intentionally activate the jam protection function.
• The jam protection function may not operate if an object becomes caught immediately before the back door reaches the fully closed position. Keep fingers, hands, clothing, and other objects away from the closing area.
• Depending on the shape or position of the trapped object, the jam protection function may not operate correctly. Always make sure that no part of a person or object can become caught while the Toyota RAV4 back door is closing.

■ Hands Free Power Back Door (if equipped)

Observe the following precautions whenever operating the Hands Free Power Back Door.

Failure to follow these precautions may result in death or serious injury.

• Carefully check the surrounding area before operating the back door. Make sure there are no people, obstacles, or personal belongings that could interfere with its movement or become caught.
• When moving your foot near and away from the lower center portion of the rear bumper, avoid contact with the exhaust pipes until they have cooled sufficiently. Touching a hot exhaust pipe may cause burns.
• Do not leave the electronic key within the effective operating range or detection area of the luggage compartment, as this may allow unintended operation of the Toyota RAV4 Hands Free Power Back Door.

NOTICE

■ Back door spindles

The back door is equipped with spindles that support the door and hold it in position during operation.

Observe the following precautions when handling or working near the back door spindles.

Failure to follow these precautions may damage a back door spindle and result in improper operation or malfunction.

• Do not attach foreign materials, including stickers, plastic sheets, tape, or adhesives, to the spindle rod.
• Do not attach heavy accessories to the back door. Before installing an accessory, contact your Toyota dealer for information about suitable parts and installation requirements.
• Do not place your hand on the spindle or apply sideways force to the spindle rod or its mounting points.

■ To prevent back door closer malfunction

Do not push, pull, or otherwise apply excessive force to the back door while the back door closer is operating. Excessive force may interfere with the closing movement and cause the back door closer to malfunction.

■ To prevent damage to the power back door

• Make sure that no ice is present between the back door and the vehicle frame where it could restrict movement. Operating the Toyota RAV4 power back door while excessive resistance or load is present may cause a malfunction.
• Do not apply excessive force to the back door while automatic opening or closing is in progress.
• Do not damage the sensors installed along the right and left edges of the power back door with a knife, tool, or other sharp object. If a sensor is damaged or disconnected, the power back door will not close automatically.

■ Hands Free Power Back Door precautions (if equipped)

The kick sensor is positioned behind the lower center area of the rear bumper. Observe the following precautions to help ensure that the Toyota RAV4 Hands Free Power Back Door operates correctly and responds consistently:

• Keep the lower center portion of the rear bumper clean at all times.

  If this area is dirty or covered with snow, the kick sensor may not operate correctly. Remove all dirt, snow, or other material, move the Toyota RAV4 from its current position, and then check the operation of the kick sensor again.

  If the kick sensor still does not operate, have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer.

• Do not apply rain-clearing hydrophilic treatments or any other type of coating to the lower center portion of the rear bumper, as this may interfere with proper kick sensor operation.
• Do not park the vehicle close to grass, trees, or other objects that may move and repeatedly contact the lower center portion of the rear bumper.

  If the Toyota RAV4 remains parked near moving objects that touch or pass close to this area, the kick sensor may not operate correctly.

  Move the vehicle away from the objects and check the kick sensor again. If normal operation is not restored, have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer.

• Do not subject the kick sensor or the surrounding rear bumper area to a strong impact.

  A heavy impact may damage the sensor or prevent it from detecting the required movement correctly. Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer if the kick sensor does not operate after either of the following situations:

  • The kick sensor or the area surrounding it has been subjected to a strong impact.
  • The lower center portion of the rear bumper has been scratched, deformed, or otherwise damaged.
• Do not disassemble or modify the rear bumper, as doing so may affect the position or operation of the kick sensor.
• Do not attach stickers, adhesive materials, or similar items to the rear bumper near the sensor area.
• Do not paint or refinish the rear bumper, as changes to the bumper surface may interfere with the Hands Free Power Back Door function.
• If a bicycle carrier or another similar heavy accessory is attached to the power back door, disable the Hands Free Power Back Door function before using the Toyota RAV4.

Changing settings of the power back door system (vehicles with power back door) Toyota RAV4 2026

The Toyota RAV4 power back door settings can be changed by opening the "Vehicle Settings" - "PBD" menu from the screen on the multi-information display.

The selected power back door settings remain stored when the engine switch is turned to OFF. To restore the original configuration, manually change the applicable options back through the screen of the multi-information display.

Adjusting the open position of the back door (vehicles with power back door)

The maximum opening position of the Toyota RAV4 power back door can be adjusted to a preferred height.

1. Open the back door and stop it at the desired position.

2. Press and hold the power back door switch located on the back door for approximately 2 seconds.

When the selected position has been successfully stored, the buzzer sounds 4 times.

The next time the power back door is opened, it will stop automatically at the newly registered position.

■ Canceling the adjusted open position of the back door

Press and hold the power back door switch on the back door for approximately 7 seconds.

The buzzer first sounds 4 times and then sounds twice more to confirm that the adjusted position has been canceled. The next time the power back door opens, it will move to the initial opening position.

■ Customization

The preferred power back door opening position can also be configured through the multi-information display.

If different stop positions are registered using the power back door switch and the multi-information display, priority is given to the position that was set most recently.

Smart key system Toyota RAV4

The following operations can be performed simply by carrying the electronic key with you, such as in a pocket or bag. The driver should always keep the electronic key in their possession when operating the Toyota RAV4.

• Locks and unlocks the side doors
• Locks and unlocks the back door
• Starts the engine

■ Antenna location

1. Antennas outside the cabin at the front of the vehicle
2. Antennas outside the cabin at the rear of the vehicle, if equipped
3. Antenna outside the luggage compartment
4. Antennas located inside the cabin

■ Effective range (areas within which the electronic key is detected)

1. When locking or unlocking the doors

The smart key system can be operated when the electronic key is within approximately 2.3 ft. (0.7 m) of the front door handles, rear door handles if equipped, or the back door opener switch. Only a door that detects the electronic key within its operating range can be controlled.

2. When starting the engine or changing engine switch modes

The system can be operated when the electronic key is detected inside the Toyota RAV4.

■ If an alarm sounds or a warning message is displayed

Audible alarms and warning messages shown on the multi-information display help protect against unexpected accidents, incorrect smart key operation, and vehicle theft. When a warning message appears, carefully read the displayed information and take the appropriate corrective action.

When only an alarm sounds and no warning message is displayed, refer to the circumstances and corrective procedures shown below.

• When an exterior alarm sounds once for 5 seconds

• When an interior alarm sounds continuously

■ Battery-saving function

The battery-saving function activates to help prevent the electronic key battery and the vehicle battery from becoming discharged when the Toyota RAV4 remains unused for an extended period.

• In the following situations, the smart key system may require additional time to unlock the doors:
  • The electronic key has remained within approximately 6 ft. (2 m) of the outside of the vehicle for 10 minutes or longer.
  • The smart key system has not been used for 5 days or longer.
• If the smart key system has not been used for 14 days or longer, the doors cannot be unlocked using the entry function at any door other than the driver's door. In this situation, grip the driver's door handle, or use the wireless remote control or mechanical key to unlock the doors.

■ Turning an electronic key to battery-saving mode

• When battery-saving mode is enabled, battery consumption is reduced by preventing the electronic key from continuously receiving radio waves.

While pressing and holding , press twice.

Confirm that the electronic key indicator flashes 4 times to indicate that battery-saving mode has been activated.

While battery-saving mode is active, the Toyota RAV4 smart key system cannot be used. To cancel this mode and restore normal electronic key operation, press any button on the electronic key.

• Electronic keys that will not be used for an extended period can be placed in battery-saving mode in advance to help reduce unnecessary battery consumption.

■ When electronic key function stops

If the position of the electronic key remains unchanged for a certain period, such as when the key is left in one place, its function may stop temporarily to reduce battery depletion.

Normal operation can be restored automatically by changing the position of the electronic key, such as by picking it up or moving it to another location.

■ Conditions affecting operation

The smart key system communicates using weak radio waves. Under the following conditions, communication between the electronic key and the Toyota RAV4 may be disrupted, preventing the smart key system, wireless remote control, or engine immobilizer system from operating correctly.

• When the electronic key battery is depleted.
• When the vehicle is near a television tower, electric power plant, gas station, radio station, large electronic display, airport, or another facility that generates strong radio waves or electrical noise.
• When the electronic key is touching or covered by any of the following metallic objects:
  • Cards with aluminum foil attached.
  • Metallic wallets or bags.
  • Coins.
  • Metal hand warmers.
  • Media such as CDs and DVDs.
• When another wireless key that emits radio waves is being used nearby.
• When the electronic key is carried together with any of the following radio-wave-emitting devices:
  • A portable radio, cellular phone, cordless phone, or another wireless communication device.
  • Another vehicle's electronic key or a wireless key that emits radio waves.
  • A personal computer or personal digital assistant (PDA).
  • A digital audio player.
  • A portable game system.
• When metallic window tint or another metallic object is attached to the rear window.
• When the electronic key is placed close to a battery charger or other electronic equipment.
• When the vehicle is parked in a coin-operated parking facility, as radio waves used to detect vehicles may interfere with smart key system operation.

■ Note for the entry function

Even when the electronic key is within the effective detection range, the entry function may not operate correctly in the following situations:

• The electronic key is too close to a window or exterior door handle, positioned near the ground, or held unusually high when the doors are being locked or unlocked.
• The electronic key is placed on the instrument panel, luggage cover, or floor, or stored in a door pocket or the glove box when the engine is started or the engine switch mode is changed.

• Do not leave the electronic key on top of the instrument panel or near a door pocket when exiting the vehicle. Depending on radio-wave reception conditions, the key may be detected by an antenna outside the cabin, allowing the doors to be locked from outside and potentially leaving the electronic key inside the Toyota RAV4.
• As long as the electronic key remains within the effective range, another person may be able to lock or unlock the doors. However, only a door that detects the electronic key can be used to unlock the vehicle.
• Even when the electronic key is not physically inside the vehicle, the engine may be able to start if the key is positioned close to a window.
• The doors may unlock if a large amount of water strikes a door handle, such as during heavy rain or while the vehicle is in a car wash, when the electronic key is within the effective operating range.

(If none of the doors are opened and closed, they will automatically lock again after approximately 60 seconds.)

• If the wireless remote control is used to lock the doors while the electronic key is near the Toyota RAV4, the entry function may not unlock the doors afterward. In this situation, use the wireless remote control to unlock the vehicle.
• Touching the door lock sensor while wearing gloves may delay the locking response or prevent the sensor from operating. Remove the gloves and touch the lock sensor again with your bare hand.
• When the doors are locked using the lock sensor, recognition signals are provided for up to two consecutive locking operations. After the second operation, no additional recognition signals will be given.
• If a door handle becomes wet while the electronic key is within the effective operating range, the door may repeatedly lock and unlock. When washing the Toyota RAV4, use one of the following procedures to prevent this behavior:
• Place the electronic key at least 6 ft. (2 m) away from the vehicle. Keep the key in a secure location to prevent theft.
• Set the electronic key to battery-saving mode to temporarily disable smart key system operation.

• If the electronic key is left inside the vehicle and a door handle becomes wet during a car wash, a message may appear on the multi-information display and an exterior buzzer may sound. To stop the alarm, securely lock all the doors.
• The lock sensor may not operate correctly if it is covered by or comes into contact with ice, snow, mud, or similar material. Clean the sensor and try the locking operation again, or use the lock sensor located on the lower part of the door handle.
• Approaching the effective detection range or gripping the door handle too suddenly may prevent the doors from unlocking. If this occurs, return the door handle to its original position, confirm that the doors have unlocked, and then pull the handle again.
• If another electronic key is present within the detection area, the smart key system may require slightly more time to unlock the doors after the door handle is gripped.

■ When the vehicle is not driven for extended periods

• To reduce the risk of vehicle theft, do not leave the electronic key within 6 ft. (2 m) of the Toyota RAV4 when it will not be driven for an extended period.
• The smart key system can be deactivated in advance when entry operation is not required.
• Battery-saving mode can be used to reduce power consumption and help preserve the electronic key battery during long periods of non-use.

■ To operate the system properly

Always carry the electronic key when using the smart key system. When operating the system from outside the Toyota RAV4, avoid holding or placing the electronic key unnecessarily close to the vehicle.

Depending on where the electronic key is positioned and how it is being carried or held, the vehicle may not detect it correctly and the smart key system may not operate as intended. In some cases, the alarm may be triggered unexpectedly or the door lock prevention function may not activate.

■ If the smart key system does not operate properly

• Locking and unlocking the doors: Use the mechanical key.
• Starting the engine: Follow the specified procedure for starting the engine when normal smart key operation is unavailable.

■ Customization

Certain Toyota RAV4 settings, including operation of the smart key system, can be changed to suit the driver's preferences.

If the smart key system has been disabled through a customized setting, refer to the applicable instructions for performing the following operations without the entry function:

• Locking and unlocking the doors: Use the wireless remote control or mechanical key.
• Starting the engine and changing the engine switch modes.
• Stopping the engine.

WARNING

■ Caution regarding interference with electronic devices

• People with implantable cardiac pacemakers, cardiac resynchronization therapy pacemakers, or implantable cardioverter defibrillators should maintain a reasonable distance from the Toyota RAV4 smart key system antennas.

  Radio waves emitted by the system may affect the operation of these medical devices. The entry function can be disabled when necessary. Contact your Toyota dealer for details about the radio-wave frequency and the timing of radio-wave transmission, and consult your doctor to determine whether the entry function should be disabled.

• Users of electrical medical devices other than implantable cardiac pacemakers, cardiac resynchronization therapy pacemakers, or implantable cardioverter defibrillators should consult the device manufacturer for information about how radio waves may affect its operation.

  Radio waves from the smart key system could have unexpected effects on the operation of certain medical devices.
