Toyota RAV4: Interior features - Using the air conditioning system and defogger

The Toyota RAV4 interior includes climate-control features designed to help maintain a comfortable cabin environment in changing weather conditions. Depending on the vehicle equipment, the air conditioning system can regulate airflow, fan speed, and temperature to suit the needs of the driver and passengers.

Correct use of the air conditioning system can improve comfort during both hot and cold weather while supporting clear visibility through the windows. Select the appropriate airflow outlets and temperature settings according to the current cabin conditions and the number of occupants inside the Toyota RAV4.

The windshield and window defogging functions help remove condensation, fog, or light frost that may obstruct the driver’s view. Before driving, make sure the windshield and other windows provide sufficient visibility, and adjust the Toyota RAV4 climate-control settings whenever changing weather causes the glass to fog again.

■ Adjusting the temperature setting

Turn the temperature control switch clockwise to increase the cabin temperature or counterclockwise to select a cooler setting. Adjust the control gradually until a comfortable temperature is reached inside the Toyota RAV4.

If the "A/C" switch is not pressed, the system will supply air at approximately the outside temperature or provide heated air, depending on the selected temperature setting and operating conditions.

■ Fan speed setting

Turn the fan speed control switch clockwise to increase airflow or counterclockwise to reduce the fan speed.

Press the on/off switch to stop the fan and turn off airflow from the climate-control system.

When the fan is off, press the on/off switch or rotate the fan speed control switch to turn the fan back on at the selected speed.

■ Changing the airflow mode

Press the airflow mode control switch to select where air is directed inside the cabin.

The airflow mode changes in sequence each time the switch is pressed, allowing the driver to direct air toward the upper body, footwell, or windshield area as required.

1. Air is directed toward the upper body.
2. Air is directed toward the upper body and feet.
3. Air is directed mainly toward the feet.
4. Air is directed toward the feet while the windshield defogging outlets also operate.

■ Switching between outside air and recirculated air modes

Press the outside air/recirculated air mode switch to change the source of air entering the passenger compartment.

Each press alternates the system between outside air mode, which draws fresh air into the Toyota RAV4, and recirculated air mode, which circulates air already inside the cabin.

When recirculated air mode is selected, the indicator on the outside air/recirculated air mode switch illuminates.

■ Setting the cooling and dehumidification function

Press the "A/C" switch to activate the cooling and dehumidification function.

When the function is operating, the indicator on the "A/C" switch illuminates. Dehumidified airflow can also help reduce moisture inside the cabin and improve window-clearing performance.

■ Defogging the windshield

The windshield defogger is used to clear fog from the windshield and front side windows when condensation limits visibility.

Press the windshield defogger switch to direct airflow toward the windshield and front side windows.

If recirculated air mode is currently selected, switch to outside air mode to bring in fresh air and support more effective defogging.

To clear the windshield and side windows more quickly, increase the fan speed and select a warmer temperature setting.

After the windshield has been cleared, press the windshield defogger switch again to return the Toyota RAV4 climate-control system to its previous airflow mode.

While the windshield defogger is operating, the indicator on the windshield defogger switch remains illuminated.

■ Defogging the rear window and outside rear-view mirrors (if equipped)

The rear window defogger removes fog, condensation, and frost from the rear glass. On equipped vehicles, the same function also helps clear raindrops, dew, and frost from the outside rear-view mirrors.

Press the rear window and outside rear-view mirror defoggers switch to activate these functions.

When the rear window and outside rear-view mirror defoggers are operating, the indicator on the corresponding switch illuminates to confirm activation.

The rear window and outside rear-view mirror defoggers automatically turn off after approximately 60 minutes of operation.

Depending on conditions such as the outside temperature and the state of the charging system, the rear window and outside rear-view mirror defoggers may instead turn off automatically after approximately 15 minutes.

■ For quick cooling

Press the "MAX A/C" switch when rapid cooling of the Toyota RAV4 interior is required.

The air conditioning system will turn on automatically and begin operating with settings intended to cool the passenger compartment quickly.

At this time, the following changes will occur:

• Recirculated air mode will be selected to circulate the cooler cabin air.
• The windshield defogger will be turned off.
• The airflow mode will change to the upper-body outlet setting.

■ Operation of the air conditioning system in Eco drive mode

While Eco drive mode is selected, the air conditioning system is regulated to prioritize fuel efficiency. Engine speed and compressor operation may be controlled in a way that limits available heating or cooling performance.

Use one or more of the following adjustments when stronger climate-control performance is needed inside the Toyota RAV4:

• Increase or otherwise adjust the fan speed.
• Change the temperature setting.
• Turn off Eco drive mode.

■ Fogging of the windows

• The windows are more likely to fog when humidity inside the vehicle is high. Turning on the "A/C" switch dehumidifies the air supplied through the outlets and helps clear the windshield more effectively.
• If the "A/C" switch is turned off, moisture may remain in the cabin air and the windows may fog more easily.
• Extended use of recirculated air mode may increase interior humidity and cause the windows of the Toyota RAV4 to fog.

■ When driving on dusty roads

Close all windows before driving through dusty conditions. If dust raised by the vehicle continues to enter the cabin after the windows are closed, set the air intake to outside air mode and select any fan speed other than off.

■ Outside air/recirculated air mode

Temporarily selecting recirculated air mode can help prevent dirty or unpleasant outside air from entering the passenger compartment. It can also support faster cooling when the outside temperature is high by recirculating air that has already been cooled inside the vehicle.

■ When the outside temperature falls to approximately 32°F (0°C)

The cooling and dehumidification function may not operate even when the "A/C" switch is pressed. This can occur because of the low outside temperature and does not necessarily indicate a malfunction.

■ Ventilation and air conditioning odors

• To introduce fresh air into the Toyota RAV4 cabin, select outside air mode.
• During normal use, odors from inside and outside the vehicle may enter and accumulate within the air conditioning system. These odors may later be released through the air outlets.
• To help reduce the development of unpleasant odors, set the air conditioning system to outside air mode shortly before turning off the vehicle.
• When the vehicle is parked, the system automatically changes to outside air mode to encourage airflow through the passenger compartment and help reduce odors when the Toyota RAV4 is started again.

■ Air conditioning system operation when the engine is stopped by the Stop & Start system (vehicles with Stop & Start system)

When the engine is stopped through operation of the Stop & Start system, the cooling, heating, and dehumidification functions of the air conditioning system are suspended. Air at approximately the ambient temperature may continue to flow from the outlets, although airflow may also stop depending on the operating conditions. To maintain normal air conditioning performance while the vehicle is stationary, press the Stop & Start cancel switch to deactivate the Stop & Start system.

■ When the windshield fogs up while the engine is stopped by the Stop & Start system (vehicles with Stop & Start system)

Press the windshield defogger switch. This will restart the engine and activate the appropriate air conditioning operation to help clear fog from the windshield and restore forward visibility.

If the windshield continues to fog up repeatedly, press the Stop & Start cancel switch and refrain from using the Stop & Start system. Keeping the engine running allows the Toyota RAV4 climate control system to maintain a more consistent airflow and windshield temperature.

■ When an odor comes from the air conditioning system while the engine is stopped by the Stop & Start system (vehicles with Stop & Start system)

Press the Stop & Start cancel switch to restart the engine. Restarting the engine allows the air conditioning system to resume normal operation and may help reduce odors entering or circulating through the Toyota RAV4 passenger compartment.

■ Air conditioning system refrigerant

• A label containing important information about the air conditioning system refrigerant is attached to the underside of the hood at the location shown in the following illustration. Refer to this label before any inspection, repair, or service work is performed.

• The symbols displayed on the refrigerant label provide important safety and service information. The meaning of each symbol is explained below:

■ To prevent the windshield from fogging up

Do not use the windshield defogger switch while cool air is being supplied in extremely humid weather conditions.

The difference between the outside air temperature and the temperature of the windshield may cause the outer surface of the glass to fog up. This can obstruct the driver’s view and make it difficult to observe the road, surrounding vehicles, pedestrians, or other potential hazards.

■ When the outside rear view mirror defoggers are operating (if equipped)

Do not touch the surfaces of the outside rear view mirrors while the mirror defoggers are operating. The mirror surfaces may become hot and could cause burns.

NOTICE

■ To prevent battery discharge

Do not leave the air conditioning system operating longer than necessary when the engine is off. Extended operation may discharge the Toyota RAV4 battery and could prevent the engine from starting.

■ When repairing or replacing parts of the air conditioning system

Have all air conditioning system repairs and component replacements performed by your Toyota dealer. The system requires appropriate equipment, procedures, and handling by qualified personnel.

When a component of the air conditioning system, such as the evaporator, needs to be replaced, it must be replaced with a new component. Proper replacement helps preserve the intended operation, reliability, and safety of the Toyota RAV4 air conditioning system.

Air Outlet Layout and Operation Toyota RAV4 hybrid

■ Location of air outlets

The distribution of air through the Toyota RAV4 cabin, as well as the amount of air delivered from each outlet, changes according to the selected airflow mode. Choose the appropriate mode to direct conditioned air toward the desired areas of the passenger compartment.

■ Adjusting the airflow direction and opening or closing the air outlets

Front

1. Move the outlet control to direct the airflow to the left or right and upward or downward. Adjust the direction so that air circulates comfortably without blowing continuously toward the face.
2. Move the control to the open position to allow air to flow through the vent.
3. Move the control to the closed position when airflow from that vent is not required.

Rear

1. Adjust the rear outlet control to direct the airflow to the left or right and upward or downward, allowing rear passengers to select a comfortable airflow direction.
2. Move the control to the open position to supply conditioned air through the rear vent.
3. Move the control to the closed position to stop airflow from the rear vent when it is not needed.

WARNING

■ To avoid interfering with windshield defogger operation

Do not place objects on the instrument panel where they could cover or block the air outlets. Restricted airflow may reduce the effectiveness of the Toyota RAV4 windshield defogging system, allowing fog to remain on the glass and obstructing the driver’s view of the road.

The air outlets and fan speed are automatically regulated according to the selected temperature setting, helping maintain a comfortable environment throughout the Toyota RAV4 cabin.

■ Adjusting the temperature setting

Turn the driver's side temperature control knob clockwise to increase the selected temperature. Turn the knob counterclockwise to decrease the temperature. The Toyota RAV4 automatic climate control system will adjust its operation according to the selected setting.

The air conditioning system switches between simultaneous and individual temperature control modes each time the "SYNC" switch is pressed.

Simultaneous mode, with the indicator on the "SYNC" switch illuminated: The driver's side temperature control knob adjusts the temperature for both the driver's and front passenger's sides. Operating the passenger's side temperature control knob while this mode is active automatically changes the system to individual mode.

Individual mode, with the indicator on the "SYNC" switch off: The temperature settings for the driver's and front passenger's sides can be adjusted separately, allowing each occupant to select a preferred level of comfort.

■ Setting the fan speed

Press the fan speed increase switch to raise the fan speed. Press the fan speed decrease switch to reduce the airflow. Repeatedly pressing either switch changes the fan setting to the desired level.

Press the "OFF" switch to turn off the fan and stop normal air conditioning airflow.

■ Changing the airflow mode

Press the airflow mode control switch to select where air is directed inside the passenger compartment.

The airflow mode changes in the following sequence each time the switch is pressed:

1. Air is directed toward the upper body.
2. Air is directed toward the upper body and feet.
3. Air is directed mainly toward the feet.
4. Air is directed toward the feet while the windshield defogger also operates.

■ Switching between outside air and recirculated air modes

■ Setting the cooling and dehumidification function

Press the "A/C" switch to activate or deactivate the cooling and dehumidification function.

When the function is operating, the indicator on the "A/C" switch illuminates. This function cools the supplied air and helps remove excess moisture from the cabin air when required.

■ Eco air conditioning mode

In eco air conditioning mode, climate control operation is adjusted with reduced fuel consumption given priority. This may include limiting fan speed or moderating other air conditioning functions while continuing to provide cabin ventilation and temperature control.

Press the eco air conditioning mode switch to activate this operating mode.

When eco air conditioning mode is active, the indicator on the eco air conditioning mode switch illuminates. Press the switch again when normal air conditioning performance is preferred.

■ Defogging the windshield

The windshield defogger is designed to clear condensation from the windshield and front side windows, helping restore a clear view of the road and surrounding traffic.

Press the windshield defogger switch to activate the defogging operation.

If recirculated air mode is currently selected, set the outside/recirculated air mode switch to outside air mode. The Toyota RAV4 climate control system may make this change automatically. To clear the windshield and front side windows more quickly, increase both the airflow and temperature settings.

After the windshield and side windows have been cleared, press the windshield defogger switch again to return the air conditioning system to its previous operating mode.

While the windshield defogger is active, the indicator on the windshield defogger switch illuminates to show that the function is operating.

■ Defogging the rear window and outside rear view mirrors (if equipped)

The defoggers are used to clear condensation from the rear window and remove raindrops, dew, or frost from the surfaces of the outside rear view mirrors, if the Toyota RAV4 is equipped with heated mirrors.

Press the rear window and outside rear view mirror defogger switch to activate both functions.

The rear window and outside rear view mirror defoggers normally turn off automatically after approximately 60 minutes of operation.

Depending on conditions such as the outside temperature and the state of the charging system, the rear window and mirror defoggers may instead turn off automatically after approximately 15 minutes.

When the rear window and outside rear view mirror defogger switch is on, its indicator illuminates to confirm that the heating elements are operating.

■ Fogging of the windows

• The windows are more likely to fog when humidity inside the vehicle is high. Turning on the "A/C" switch dehumidifies the air supplied through the outlets and helps clear the windshield more effectively.
• If the "A/C" switch is turned off, moisture may remain in the cabin air and the windows may fog more easily.
• Extended use of recirculated air mode may increase interior humidity and cause the windows of the Toyota RAV4 to fog.

■ When driving on dusty roads

■ When the outside temperature exceeds 75ºF (24ºC) and the air conditioning system is operating

• To reduce the amount of power used by the air conditioning system, recirculated air mode may be selected automatically.

  This automatic operation may also help reduce fuel consumption while maintaining the selected cabin temperature.

• Recirculated air mode is selected as the default setting when the engine switch is turned to ON under these conditions.
• Outside air mode can be selected at any time by pressing the outside/recirculated air mode switch.

■ Operation of the air conditioning system in Eco drive mode

• When Eco drive mode is selected, air conditioning operation is adjusted to prioritize fuel efficiency in the following ways:
  • Engine speed and compressor operation are controlled to limit heating and cooling capacity.
  • Fan speed is restricted when automatic mode is selected.
• To improve heating or cooling performance when greater climate control output is needed, perform one or more of the following operations:
  • Adjust the fan speed manually.
  • Turn off Eco drive mode.
  • Turn off Eco air conditioning mode.
• When the Toyota RAV4 driving mode is changed to Eco drive mode, Eco air conditioning mode activates automatically. Eco air conditioning mode can still be turned off independently by pressing the Eco air conditioning mode switch.

■ When the outside temperature falls to approximately 32ºF (0ºC)

The dehumidification function may not operate even when the "A/C" switch is pressed. This is a normal response to low outside temperatures and does not necessarily indicate a malfunction in the Toyota RAV4 air conditioning system.

■ Ventilation and air conditioning odors

• To bring fresh air into the passenger compartment, set the air conditioning system to outside air mode.
• During normal use, various odors from inside and outside the vehicle may enter and gradually accumulate within the air conditioning system. These trapped odors may later be released through the air outlets when the system is operating.
• To help reduce the possibility of unpleasant odors developing:
  • It is recommended that the air conditioning system be switched to outside air mode before turning off the Toyota RAV4.
  • When the air conditioning system is started in automatic mode, blower operation may be delayed briefly. This temporary delay is part of normal system operation.
• When the vehicle is parked, the system automatically changes to outside air mode to promote better air circulation throughout the cabin. This operation helps reduce odors that may otherwise be noticeable when the vehicle is started again.

■ Air conditioning system operation when the engine is stopped by the Stop & Start system (vehicles with Stop & Start system)

When the engine is stopped through normal Stop & Start system operation, the automatic air conditioning cooling, heating, and dehumidification functions are temporarily suspended. Depending on the outside temperature and other operating conditions, the fan speed may be reduced or airflow may stop completely. To prevent the air conditioning system from reducing or stopping its operation, press the Stop & Start cancel switch and refrain from using the Stop & Start system.

■ When the windshield fogs up while the engine is stopped by the Stop & Start system (vehicles with Stop & Start system)

Press the windshield defogger switch. The engine will restart, allowing the Toyota RAV4 climate control system to resume the airflow and dehumidification needed to clear the windshield.

If the windshield continues to fog repeatedly, press the Stop & Start cancel switch and refrain from using the Stop & Start system. Keeping the engine running allows the defogging function to operate more consistently.

■ When an odor comes from the air conditioning system while the engine is stopped by the Stop & Start system (vehicles with Stop & Start system)

Press the Stop & Start cancel switch to restart the engine. Restarting the engine allows normal air conditioning operation to resume and may help reduce odors coming from the vents.

■ Using the Intelligent Assistant (if equipped)

The Toyota RAV4 air conditioning system can be operated by using the Intelligent Assistant, allowing supported climate control functions to be accessed through the vehicle's multimedia system.

Using automatic mode

1. Press the "AUTO" switch.

The dehumidification function begins operating, while the air outlets and fan speed are adjusted automatically according to the selected temperature and the humidity level. This allows the system to manage cabin comfort without requiring constant manual adjustments.

2. Adjust the temperature setting to the desired level.

3. To stop air conditioning operation, press the "OFF" switch.

If the fan speed setting or airflow mode is adjusted manually, the automatic mode indicator turns off. However, automatic control remains active for the functions that were not manually changed, allowing the system to continue regulating the other climate settings.

■ Using automatic mode

Fan speed is regulated automatically according to the selected temperature, the conditions inside the Toyota RAV4 cabin, and the surrounding environment.

Immediately after the automatic mode switch is pressed, the fan may stop temporarily or operate at a reduced speed until suitably warm or cool air is ready to flow. This normal operation helps prevent uncomfortable air from being directed into the passenger compartment.

Front Seat Concentrated Airflow Mode (S-FLOW) Toyota RAV4 XA50

This function automatically manages the air conditioning airflow so that priority is given to the front seats when appropriate. By reducing unnecessary airflow to unoccupied areas of the cabin, S-FLOW can support more efficient climate control operation and contribute to improved fuel efficiency in the Toyota RAV4.

Front seat concentrated airflow mode operates when the following conditions are met:

• No passengers are detected in the rear seats.
• The windshield defogger is not operating.

While front seat concentrated airflow mode is operating, illuminates to show that airflow is being prioritized for the front seating area.

■ Manually turning front seat concentrated airflow mode on or off

While using front seat concentrated airflow mode, the driver can manually switch between directing airflow primarily toward the front seats and distributing airflow to all seating positions. When this selection is made manually, automatic airflow control stops operating until the conditions for returning to automatic control are met.

Press on the air conditioning control panel to change the airflow distribution.

• Indicator illuminated: Airflow is directed primarily toward the front seats.
• Indicator off: Airflow is distributed to all seating areas.

■ Operation of automatic airflow control

• To maintain a comfortable cabin environment, airflow may temporarily be directed toward seats where no passengers are detected. This can occur immediately after the engine is started or at other times depending on the outside temperature and current climate control conditions.
• After the engine has been started, passenger movement inside the Toyota RAV4 or passengers entering or leaving the vehicle may prevent the system from accurately determining which seats are occupied. In these circumstances, automatic airflow control may not operate as expected.

■ Operation of manual airflow control

Even when the function has been manually set to direct airflow only toward the front seats, the system may automatically distribute air to all seating positions if a passenger is detected in a rear seat. This adjustment helps maintain comfort throughout the occupied areas of the cabin.

■ To return to automatic airflow control

1. Confirm that the S-FLOW indicator is off, and then turn the engine switch to OFF.

2. After 60 minutes or more have elapsed, turn the engine switch to ON. Automatic airflow control can then resume according to passenger detection and climate control conditions.

Windshield Wiper De-Icer (if equipped)

This feature helps prevent ice from accumulating on the lower portion of the windshield and around the windshield wiper blades, supporting more reliable wiper operation in cold weather.

Press the windshield wiper de-icer switch to turn the system on or off.

The indicator illuminates while the windshield wiper de-icer is operating.

The windshield wiper de-icer automatically turns off after a certain period of operation. Press the switch again if additional de-icing is required.

WARNING

■ To prevent burns

Do not touch the glass along the lower part of the windshield or near the sides of the front pillars while the windshield wiper de-icer is operating. These areas may become hot enough to cause burns.

Air Outlet Layout and Operation

■ Location of air outlets

The outlets used to deliver conditioned air, as well as the amount of air supplied through each outlet, vary according to the selected airflow mode. The Toyota RAV4 climate control system directs air to the appropriate cabin areas based on the current setting.

■ Adjusting the airflow direction and opening or closing the air outlets

Front

1. Move the outlet control to direct airflow to the left or right and upward or downward.
2. Move the control to open the vent.*
3. Move the control to close the vent.*

Rear

1. Adjust the outlet to direct airflow to the left or right and upward or downward.
2. Move the control to open the vent and allow air to enter the rear seating area.
3. Move the control to close the vent when rear airflow is not required.

Do not place objects on the instrument panel where they could cover or block the air outlets. Restricted airflow may prevent the Toyota RAV4 windshield defogger from clearing condensation effectively, which could obstruct the driver's view and reduce driving safety.

Do not place heavy objects with uneven or sharp surfaces on the seats. Never insert needles, nails, or other pointed objects into the seat upholstery, as they may damage the heating or ventilation components inside the seat.

■ To prevent battery discharge

Do not use these functions while the engine is not running. Continued operation may discharge the Toyota RAV4 battery.

Heated steering wheel

Press the switch to turn the heated steering wheel on or off.

The indicator illuminates while the heated steering wheel is operating, confirming that the steering wheel grip is being warmed.

■ Operation condition

The heated steering wheel can be operated when the engine switch is in ON.

Operating the seat heaters

Front

Use the switches to turn the front seat heaters on or off and select the desired heating level.

1. High temperature setting
2. Low temperature setting

When a front seat heater is operating, the indicator on the corresponding seat heater switch illuminates.

When heating is no longer required, return the switch to the neutral position. The indicator will turn off, showing that the seat heater has stopped operating.

Rear

Press the appropriate switch to turn a rear seat heater on or off. The indicator illuminates while the seat heater is operating.

■ Operation condition

The rear seat heaters can be operated when the engine switch is in ON.

Observe the following precautions whenever a seat heater is used:

• Do not cover the heated seat with a blanket, cushion, seat cover, or similar item, as heat may become trapped and cause the seat to overheat.

Press the corresponding switches to turn the seat heaters or seat ventilators on and off and to select the desired operating level.

The level indicators A illuminate while either function is operating, allowing the selected intensity to be checked at a glance.

Each time the switch is pressed, the operating level changes in the following sequence:

   The level indicators A illuminate yellow while the seat heater is operating.
2. Turns the seat ventilator on

The seat heaters and ventilators can be operated when the engine switch is in ON.

■ Air conditioning system-linked control mode

When a seat ventilator is set to Hi, its fan speed may increase in response to the fan speed selected for the Toyota RAV4 air conditioning system. This coordinated operation helps provide stronger seat ventilation when cabin airflow is also increased.
