Toyota RAV4: For safety and security - Emergency assistance

Safety Connect

Safety Connect is a subscription-based telematics service that combines Global Positioning System (GPS) data with embedded cellular technology to provide participating Toyota RAV4 owners with safety and security features. The service is supported by Toyota's designated response center, which operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Safety Connect is available by subscription on select vehicles equipped with compatible telematics hardware.

By using Safety Connect, you agree to be bound by the Telematics Subscription Service Agreement and its Terms and Conditions, including any amendments that may take effect over time. A current copy is available at Toyota.com in the United States, Toyotapr.com in Puerto Rico, and Toyota.ca in Canada.

All use of Safety Connect is governed by the Terms and Conditions applicable at the time the service is accessed.

■ Safety Connect Services Information

  • Phone calls made through the vehicle's Bluetooth technology cannot be used while Safety Connect is actively communicating with the response center.

Bluetooth is a registered trademark of Bluetooth SIG, Inc.

  • Safety Connect became available beginning in Fall 2009 on select Toyota models in the contiguous United States. Communication with the Safety Connect response center depends on the telematics device operating correctly, the availability of a cellular connection, and adequate GPS satellite reception. These conditions may limit the ability of the Toyota RAV4 to contact the response center or receive emergency service support.

Enrollment and acceptance of the Telematics Subscription Service Agreement are required before Safety Connect services can be used. Several subscription terms may be available, and applicable charges vary according to the selected plan and the location in which the service is provided.

  • Automatic Collision Notification, Emergency Assistance, and Stolen Vehicle Location are available in the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska, Puerto Rico, and Canada. Enhanced Roadside Assistance is also available in the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada.
  • Automatic Collision Notification, Emergency Assistance, Stolen Vehicle Location, and Enhanced Roadside Assistance are not available in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

For vehicles originally sold in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Safety Connect services will not function either within or outside the U.S. Virgin Islands.

  • Safety Connect services are not subject to Section 255 of the Telecommunications Act, and the installed telematics device is not compatible with TTY equipment.

■ Languages

The Safety Connect response center can provide assistance in multiple languages, helping subscribers communicate more effectively during an emergency or service request.

The Safety Connect system provides voice prompts in English, Spanish, and French. Indicate your preferred language when enrolling so that the available prompts and response-center support can be provided appropriately.

■ When contacting the response center

Contact with the response center may be delayed or temporarily unavailable when the cellular network is congested, unavailable, or unable to establish a reliable connection from the Toyota RAV4.

Safety Connect LED light Indicators

When the engine switch is turned to ON, the red indicator illuminates for approximately 2 seconds as the system performs its initial check, and then turns off. The green indicator subsequently illuminates to show that Safety Connect service is active and available.

The following LED patterns indicate the current operating condition or status of the Safety Connect system:

  • Green indicator illuminated = Safety Connect service is active
  • Green indicator flashing = A Safety Connect call is currently in progress
  • Red indicator illuminated, except during vehicle start-up = A system malfunction may be present; contact your Toyota dealer
  • No indicator illuminated = Safety Connect service is not active

Safety Connect services

■ Automatic Collision Notification

If an airbag deploys or the Toyota RAV4 is involved in a severe rear-end collision, the system is designed to contact the Safety Connect response center automatically. The responding agent receives the vehicle's location and attempts to communicate with the occupants to determine the nature and severity of the emergency. If the occupants cannot respond, the agent treats the call as an emergency, contacts the nearest appropriate emergency service provider, explains the available details, and requests that assistance be dispatched to the vehicle's location.

■ Stolen Vehicle Location

If the Toyota RAV4 is stolen, Safety Connect can cooperate with local law enforcement authorities to assist with locating and recovering the vehicle. First file a police report, and then contact the Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331 in the United States, 1-877-855-8377 in Puerto Rico, or 1-888-869-6828 in Canada. Follow the prompts for Safety Connect and provide the requested police report and vehicle information to initiate the service.

In addition to supporting law enforcement in the recovery of a stolen vehicle, location data from a Safety Connect-equipped Toyota RAV4 may, under certain circumstances, be shared with authorized third parties to help locate the vehicle.

Additional information about this service, applicable conditions, and data handling is available at Toyota.com in the United States, Toyotapr.com in Puerto Rico, and Toyota.ca in Canada.

■ Emergency Assistance Button ("SOS")

If an emergency occurs while you are on the road, press the "SOS" button to contact the Safety Connect response center. The responding agent will identify the available Toyota RAV4 location data, evaluate the situation based on the information provided, and arrange the appropriate emergency assistance when required.

If the "SOS" button is pressed accidentally, remain connected and inform the response-center agent that there is no emergency. This allows the agent to close the call correctly without requesting unnecessary assistance.

■ Enhanced Roadside Assistance

Enhanced Roadside Assistance supplements the warranty-based Toyota roadside service by using available GPS location data to help identify the vehicle's position and coordinate support more efficiently.

Subscribers can press the "SOS" button to speak with a Safety Connect response-center agent. The agent may assist with a range of roadside situations, including towing, a flat tire, or fuel delivery. For complete details about available services, eligibility requirements, exclusions, and limitations, refer to the Safety Connect Terms and Conditions available at Toyota.com in the United States, Toyotapr.com in Puerto Rico, and Toyota.ca in Canada.

Safety information for Safety Connect

Important! Read and understand the following safety information before using Safety Connect in the Toyota RAV4.

■ Exposure to radio frequency signals

The Safety Connect equipment installed in the vehicle operates as a low-power radio transmitter and receiver. During operation, it receives and transmits radio frequency (RF) signals to support communication with cellular networks and the response center.

In August 1996, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) adopted radio frequency exposure guidelines establishing safety levels for mobile wireless phones. These guidelines are consistent with safety standards previously developed by the following United States and international organizations.

  • ANSI (American National Standards Institute) C95.1 [1992]
  • NCRP (National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurement) Report 86 [1986]
  • ICNIRP (International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection) [1996]

These standards were developed through comprehensive and periodic evaluations of the relevant scientific literature. More than 120 scientists, engineers, and physicians representing universities, government health agencies, and industry reviewed the available research when developing the ANSI C95.1 standard.

The Safety Connect system installed in the Toyota RAV4 is designed to comply with the applicable FCC guidelines as well as the standards listed above.
