Toyota RAV4: Maintenance and care - Emission inspection and maintenance (I/M) programs

Some states operate vehicle emission inspection programs that include checks of the OBD, or On-Board Diagnostics, system. The OBD system continuously monitors the operation of components associated with the emission control system and stores information when an operating problem is detected.

If the malfunction indicator lamp comes on

Illumination of the malfunction indicator lamp indicates that the OBD system has detected a problem somewhere within the emission control system. In this condition, the Toyota RAV4 may not pass an emission inspection and maintenance test and could require diagnosis or repair. Contact a Toyota dealer to have the vehicle inspected and serviced.

Your vehicle may not pass the I/M test in the following situations:

• When the battery has been disconnected or discharged, the readiness codes established during normal driving are erased.

  After battery power is restored, the vehicle must be driven under appropriate conditions so the OBD system can complete its monitoring procedures again. Depending on driving habits and operating conditions, some readiness codes may not be fully set before the test.

• When the fuel tank cap is loose, the malfunction indicator lamp may illuminate because the OBD system recognizes a temporary emission-related fault. Until the cap is secured correctly and the system completes the required checks, the vehicle may not pass the I/M test.

When the malfunction indicator lamp still remains on after several driving trips

An error code stored in the OBD system will not be cleared unless the vehicle is driven 40 or more times. If the indicator remains illuminated, do not assume that the condition has corrected itself; arrange an inspection to determine whether service is required.

If your vehicle does not pass the I/M test

Contact a Toyota dealer to have the emission control system checked and the vehicle prepared for re-testing. Keep any inspection or repair documentation provided after the service is completed.
